The use of tags for bar code identification is very popular in applications where a label is not preferred. Tag applications include:

Tags are available in either paper or synthetic formats. Paper is an inexpensive alternative that fits many general purpose applications, while synthetic tags offer significantly enhanced resistantce to abrasion, moisture, tearing and chemicals.
Tags can be formulated as thermal transfer (requiring a ribbon) or direct thermal. Specialized topcoats and inks can be added for different performance characteristics, including enhanced solvent or UV resistance.
