General Data is launched in the garage of Peter Wenzel in a Pittsburgh, PA neighborhood. Initially Peter focused his new business on distribution of line, matrix and related printing and computer equipment.
As the barcode industry grew, General Data became a national distributor, integrator and service provider for barcode printing, scanning and automated data collection equipment. Soon after, General Data added label manufacturing and converting capabilities to better serve the growing demand.
As the demand for labels in unique custom applications and harsh environments increased, General Data expanded its capabilities, adding specialized label manufacturing and converting equipment and a full research, development and testing lab.
General Financial and Tax Consulting was formed. With the experience and ability to provide a host of tax consulting and financial services to companies in diverse industries, GFTC is able to utilize advanced barcode tagging, scanning, data collection and wireless technologies to provide unique fixed asset management solutions.
As General Data's service division continued to expand its capabilities and offerings, General Data acquired Universal Laser, a California-based provider of printer services and supplies. This acquisition broadened General Data's field service capabilities while adding a full Managed Print Services product portfolio.
2011 also saw the establishment of General Data Healthcare, Inc., a subsidiary of General Data. General Data Healthcare was formed to address and manage General Data's rapid growth in the healthcare market, particularly in the anatomical pathology area. General Data's ID/Positive laser cassette markers are the first cassette labeler that utilizes laser marking technology, which has now become the global standard for effective and reliable barcode identification of tissue cassettes.
General Data acquired Triangle Biomedical Sciences Inc., (TBS) of Durham, North Carolina, a leading manufacturer and supplier of instrumentation, reagents and consumables for the clinical and research pathology marketplace. This acquisition enables General Data Healthcare to offer an expanded and comprehensive portfolio of equipment, solutions and supplies that enable histology laboratories to utilize advanced products and technologies for specimen identification, preparation, processing, tracking and storage.
Further expanding its printer service and printer supplies capabilities, General Data acquired Spectrum Computer Products, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio, a regional provider of printer service and supplies. This acquisition broadened General Data's customer reach and printer supplies capabilities.
2016 began with the acquistion of Data Support, Inc., a New York-based provider of barcode data collection and tracking solutions. This acquistion added a number of powerful barcode-based tracking products and solutions to General Data's software portfolio, including Firebug™ and Tool Hawk™.
