General Data is the authorized systems integrator for barcode labeling and data capture equipment, systems and service for the Plex Manufacturing Cloud. We know Plex – and we help companies design, spec and install the right mix of labeling, barcode scanning, data capture and wireless network equipment and services to maximize their effectiveness and return on investment.
What type of equipment does General Data supply for my Plex system?
General Data provides all equipment and devices sanctioned and approved for use with Plex for data collection, printing, machine access, labeling and associated wireless infrastructure, services, configurations, and installations.
Do I buy this equipment through Plex, or directly from General Data?
For this type of equipment you would work with General Data directly. If you are not already an existing General Data customer, you will need to complete our New Customer Application.
Why use General Data instead of my local hardware supplier for my Plex equipment?
General Data is the authorized systems integrator for barcode labeling and data capture equipment, systems and service for the Plex Manufacturing Cloud. For over 30 years, General Data has been nationally recognized as an expert resource for all aspects of labeling and identification, barcode and RFID data collection, enterprise mobility, wireless networks and equipment service. We are premier partners with the industry leading suppliers, including Zebra, Honeywell and others. We know Plex – and we help companies design, spec and install the right mix of labeling, barcode scanning, data capture and wireless network equipment and services to maximize their effectiveness and return on investment.
If I contact General Data about our equipment needs, what can I expect to happen?
To begin, you will be put in touch with a General Data Plex systems expert. They will work directly with you to discuss your needs and your different equipment and service options, and provide additional information and price quotes. If you are not already a General Data customer, they will send you the General Data New Customer Application, and facilitate the process of establishing your account. Once you are an established General Data customer, you will be able to order anything from our Plex Solutions Catalog, as well as any other products and services that General Data offers. If you are ordering mobile devices, General Data will pre-configure them to interface with the Plex modules and applications, as well as your WLAN configurations and settings.
I am planning on installing Plex for the first time or adding to/upgrading a module to my existing Plex system. How can General Data help me with this?
Using the right barcode labeling, scanning and data capture equipment and infrastructure can make a big difference in the overall effectiveness of an individual Plex module or a new Plex system installation. General Data will help you review your different equipment and service options for the module(s) or new system, and help you specify, configure, install and manage the equipment and infrastructure so it provides maximum return on investment.
We are a new Plex customer and just beginning our implementation, when should we contact General Data?
The hardware discussion typically works best just prior to the conference room pilot. This is so demo equipment can be specified and delivered in time to be utilized during the pilot. The pilot will provide a better idea of where the hardware will be utilized in your process and nail down what hardware best fits each situation.
Who configures the mobile computers we will use with our Plex system?
Every mobile device ordered through General Data to be interfaced to the Plex Cloud applications will be delivered preconfigured. General Data will also work with your implementation personnel to assure the wireless connection settings are correct for mobile computers attaching to your WLAN.
Can I use an existing WLAN to connect devices to my Plex system?
In most cases, yes – but if you choose to purchase an industrial wireless network infrastructure from General Data, you will be assured a smooth and quick start-up along with precise access point placements to provide minimum required expense to gain best possible coverage.
Why should I consider a General Data service agreement for my printer, scanner, or mobile device?
Consider the environment these electronic devices will be subjected to – and also consider the cost of downtime to your productivity and efficiency. A service agreement, coupled with strategic spares, provides the peace of mind to know your system will always be operational and working at peak efficiency – and will not cost you any lost customers. General Data offers a number of different equipment service plans and options, and can customize those to suit your individual and specific needs.
What is Hardware-as-a-Service and why use this instead of leasing the equipment?
Hardware As A Service is a new option offered by General Data for financing the acquisition of barcode labeling, printing, scanning and data capture hardware and services used with your Plex system. With HaaS you acquire the needed devices for your Plex system on a monthly subscription basis, much like the Plex software modules you use. No major capital outlay is required. The advantage over leasing is with the GDC program, the device types and solutions can be tweaked as your system evolves from day one forward. The hardware you choose initially may not be what is best later – so this optimizes your system as your needs change.
What happens if the output from one of my machines needs to be fed to the Plex system, but is not compatible?
General Data is also a full service automation systems integrator – with a full systems and programming staff experienced in developing custom interfaces. General Data can write a front end application or a translator or whatever is needed to push your data to the Plex Cloud.
